Week 4, Day 1 – There is a Season

by StephBuckwalter on June 27, 2011

It is very difficult to go through your stuff and make decisions if you’ve never thought about where you are in life–at least that’s true for a right-brained person. A lot of times, we collect stuff for some vague vision we have of the future. That’s fine, as long as space permits. But if you are running out of space, you may have to keep only what is helpful or needed in your current season of life. So as you work through the Kamikaze Cleaning Challenge, place in each room only what is needed during this season. If you have space to store what you don’t need now, keep it! If not, pass it along to someone who can use it now.

Ok so I’ve been to busy to to post lately so here goes. Ive been painting the house. I had to move everything out of the linen closet which I means i had to clean out some drawers and cabinets in nearly every room to make room for all that stuff in more convenient places. The linen closet is now a second pantry. I kinda redid the cabinets in the laundry room and managed to fit all my extra curtains and sheers in there. It is also now painted and decorated with old washboards and a couple of pics that make me happy. Other than the painting i need to finish (2nd coat) my daughters bathroom is done being decorated. I completely redid my daughters room and closet and it is now ready for the movie scene paintings we will be doing in there. Her theme will be Tinkerbell. I completely redid my two youngest boys room and have it ready for their movie scene painting. One side will be how to train your dragon and the other side will be Noah’s ark. The two oldest boys room is all cleaned out and ready for painting one side will be the Land before time and the other airplanes in the sky.
I organized my sewing area and got the last two boxes unpacked. Hubby was kind enough to hang all those pics and mirrors that were in my way along with a shelf that I happily decorated with our wedding stuff. Other than some touch up our bathroom is now painted and fully decorated. Ready to be enjoyed by me not just my hubby or baby! Speaking of which i took the time to install outlet covers now that my little one is taking off. The tiny bit of painting that needed to be done in the living room is now complete. I finally started my sourdough and have it going, Hooray! Each room is now either pretty much finished and decorated or getting there. Its all organized any way other than just a couple of boxes. It’s finally starting to look like home and not just a blank one tone canvass. TY and Orilla for motivating me to get stuff done. I couldn’t state time on anything other than painting took 7 hrs with two baby feeding breaks, ty hubby. And redoing my daughters room took a full half day, again ty hubby for helping with the kids!

Wow! You’ve done a great job of making your house a home. I’m sad to say that our bedroom still has the builder paint on the walls. Each year, we painted a few rooms, and our bedroom ended up last on the list–but it does have the nicest furnishings and bed covers so it kind of balances out. Hopefully, this will be the year.

Nothing I can count today. I just checked my number of hours per week and I’m slowly sinking by 30 minutes each week. I’ll have to step up the pace!

Nothing that counts for me either, unless the haircuts for my boys does. I finally got them out for haircuts. Too many weeks of remarks about daughters and a break in our schedule allowed for afternoon cuts and then a revisit to the shop once the hair dried and it was still too long. At least the daily chores are continuing to get done and the kids give less grief about them.

Oh wow-only keeping things that are for this season in life is sooo hard for me. I worked in my bedroom for 30 minutes today and kept noticing things that I’ve kept for too long and need to get rid of! Of course, I was just working on clearing beside my bed, but hopefully tomorrow I’ll be working in the closet:)

Good for you! I’m glad that you taken the time to make it nice and comfortable for you. The bedroom is one of the most important places I think. You deserve a peaceful place for you and hubby!

This is a hard one. Spent 2 hours today going through schoolbooks – I homeschool – to get rid of things we won’t be using. My kids are in 7th and 11th grades and I still have a 3rd, 4th, and 5th grade math texts, along with other books that, although they are the correct level, they don’t suit our style.

I spent an hour today sorting through the cd-roms. I’ve boxed up the ones that don’t run on our current computer and they’re headed out the door. That will clear so much space on the desk and make it easier to make the transition when we build the new, smaller desk we want to put in our basement. Our desk dates to the days when our computer consisted of a large, bulky CPU and a large bulky monitor. Our current computer is a nice, compact I-mac so it’s time to downgrade. First we need to downgrade the mess in the basement though!
